70 PRIMARY SCHOOL OF ATHENS
Natural shading of the school’s eastern facade
Year: 2014
Classrooms located on the building’s eastern façade receive strong sunlight in autumn and springtime during the morning hours, and heated up excessively.
As the school is taking part in environmental programmes, we proposed a trellis of climbing vegetation that will provide shade in order to resolve this issue in an environmentally-friendly manner.
On the terrace and upper floor levels, galvanised frames will be placed for planting and wires will be positioned at a distance from the façade for the plants to climb.
The plants used will be deciduous, so during winter classrooms will be warmed by the sun. The plants will be watered automatically and pupils will undertake seasonal gardening duties.
