The listed building, which was built in 1870, housed the Nautical Ethnological museum of Galaxidi. During the restoration the exterior was preserved, but for the appropriate usage of the museums space, the interior was renovated.
The yard was covered to create a reception area for the Museum and a small shop and information kiosk. The exhibition is staged on the ground floor. The ground floor was excavated, in order to create a new multi-use space for meetings-lectures, an office and workshop with independent entrance. With this new space arrangement the total usable space of the museum increased from 290 m2 to 500 m2.
The museography for exhibiting the objects of the nautical and archaeological collections was undertaken in collaboration with the museum staff. The numerous objects, over 1,500 in number, cover a chronological period from the prehistoric ages to the 20th century and are exhibited in thematic units that narrate the naval history of Galaxidi.
A uniform way to exhibit the objects was achieved, even though they were dissimilar in nature, providing the museum with a design identity. The arrangement of the showcases was specially designed to highlight the uniqueness of the objects and the geometry of the building. There are three distinct levels of information standardized to facilitate a museum visit.
